Soundgirls.org European Chapter – Foley Workshop with Tom Espinar

SoundGirls.org European Chapter Event:

Association of Sound Designers presents Foley Workshop with Tom Espinar

Date: Wednesday, June 28

Time: 2:30 pm BST (British Summer Time)

Location: Governors Room, National Theatre Rehearsal Studio, 83-101 The Cut, Lambeth, London SE1 8LL

The Association of Sound Designers invites Soundgirls.org members to join them for an afternoon of exploration and experimentation within the wonderful art of Foley sound creation, with Tom Espinar.

This seminar aims to introduce the participants to the tricks employed by Foley artists. It hopes to help them to develop their listening skills so that they can begin to understand the layers of sounds used to create the soundscapes we take for granted in some of our favourite moments in film, theatre, and TV.

Participants will get the opportunity to be hands on and so are encouraged to bring an item to make sounds. Such as different kinds of fabrics (from silk, leather, to cotton fabrics of different sizes) or things that creak and squeak (metal hinges, bolts, rusty/unoiled bits of moving metal – not too big)

Maybe some fruit and veg or different sized receptacles – glasses, cutlery, teacups.

Choose an object that you’d like to investigate further.

There is the possibility that the afternoon may get a little messy, so remember this when choosing your attire.

The seminar will be held in the Governors Room at the NT studios. The Studios are not part of the main building of the National theatre but are on the Cut.

Tom Espiner is an actor, puppeteer, Foley artist and theatre practitioner. He co-founded Sound&Fury and has worked as a puppeteer for Blind Summit and as a puppeteer and Foley artist for Complicite. Previous productions include the ENO’s Madam Butterfly and the London Olympics 2012.

This event is free for SoundGirls.org members and is limited to 25 spaces in total (including ASD members). Please register for this event and enter the code Sound Girls

If you have registered for the Pin the Mic on the Actor workshop on Wednesday, June 28 and wish to attend the Foley workshop as well, you will need to register for the Foley workshop separately.

SoundGirls.Org Supports City of Terrace Girls Empowerment Initiative with Live Sound Workshop

SoundGirls.Org is honored to support the City of Terrace Library’s Girl Empowerment initiative to inspire girls and young women and ensure that all young people reach their full potential.

SoundGirls.org presents a concert production workshop for teens. Attendants will participate in a variety of roles in concert preparation and even mix music for a live band. CALICO the band has volunteered their time to come help us.

The workshop will take place on

SoundGirls members that would like to volunteer to work the event – please contact us at soundgirls@soundgirls.org

unspecifiedCALICO the band is Kirsten Proffit and Manda Mosher. Kirsten & Manda came from individual singer/songwriter careers until Calico brought them together. As powerful as each is individually, an undeniable magic occurs when their writing and voices come together. It’s at the heart of their debut album, Rancho California, which is replete with singularly strong songwriting chops, rich harmonies, and a pervasive Americana passion. Like the expansive spirit of Laurel Canyon that spawned so many famous bands and artists, now comes this new spirit, rooted in the vast valleys and canyons of L.A.

Calico stands for California country, and also for the cat that appeared at Manda’s door one dark night, and a ghost town about halfway between L.A. and Vegas. It’s in the gentle mystery of that cat, and in that dusty stretch of desert that their music starts, haunted by Western ghosts of the past, but gentle with modern spirits, too, all blown together like tumbleweeds towards the big city. Calico is about that eternal place where the big city meets that lonely desert, where the freeways converge at the ocean. It’s about timeless roots music; it’s about voices singing in harmony.

Testimonials

As a female in my thirties, I was glad to feel so welcomed to learning live audio at this summer’s SoundGirls.Org camp. With two instructors who are active in different aspects of the business, I trusted that I was getting accurate instruction, real life situations, and practical experience for a new skill to add to my toolbox. (I even impressed myself with how much progress I made in only a week!)

The week-long class allowed me to learn the basics of stage plots, setting/striking gear, navigating analog/digital consoles, and working with a live band before ultimately sharingthe responsibility of mixing with a professional at an annual music festival in the area. And now through SoundGirls.Org’s website and social media platforms, I have a new network of professionals for future learning opportunities and job possibilities. Thank you,SoundGirls.Org!

This was so much fun, I got to make a stage plot and learn how to mic the drums. This is so exciting, I can’t believe that this is happening here.
I have learned more than I ever did taking classes in college, it was very hands on. Through workshops like these I think we can change the current trends. Someday soon long gone will be the days of the lone SoundGirl.

I absolutely loved the Live Sound camp for girls. I was able to learn a lot in a environment where I felt comfortable. The instructors were very helpful and I gained the confidence I needed to pursue a career in Live Sound.

Young girls this past summer in the central valley had opportunities to learn hands on how to run sound, how to create stage plots and input lists and many more skills that can enable them to run their own shows. My girls, who are musicians, now have the knowledge to set up their own PA and manage their own sound. This knowledge is invaluable and will follow them throughout their music life.
