An Interview with Dani Mari of Female Frequency

Sometimes you are introduced to people who have a major effect on the direction you take in life. I was recently introduced to Dani Mari, founder of Female Frequency, a “music collective dedicated to empowering women & girls in the industry through the creation of media that is entirely female generated”. Paying it Forward

Berklee College of Music hosted a panel on Women in Audio, this past Sunday at The Village Studios in Los Angeles. Organized by Justine Taormino, from Berklee College of Music, the panel included April Tucker, Tina Morris, and myself. We had a mix of Berklee Students and Alumni and SoundGirls members. It was a rewarding way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I love meeting and hearing other women’s stories and the paths they have taken. (more…)

Meet Female Frequency

11846575_488427751334833_7435856588267564587_nFemale Frequency is a musical collective dedicated to empowering women and girls in the music industry through the creation of media that is entirely female generated. Female Frequency started when singer/songwriter Dani Mari wished to work with a female producer for her next album. Dani soon realized that female producers and female owned recording studios were rare and hard to find. Dani eventually reached out to Women in Music, a professional organization dedicated to supporting, cultivating, and recognizing the talents of women in all areas of the music industry to find a female producer. Through WIM, Dani was introduced to I Am Snow Angel. Working together I Am Snow Angel and Dani came up with the idea of producing an all female recording project.  Every aspect of the recording project will be female produced. I Am Snow Angel suggested Claire London as another female to collaborate with and Female Frequency was born.

FF is currently raising money to record a five-song EP, with the long-term goal of supporting other females in additional collaborative projects in the future. FF will donate a percentage of funds raised to Women’s Audio Mission, a non-profit organization that teaches music technology to women and girls. In addition, FF is a current finalist in the Ovation TV/Rockethub “Creative Studio” initiative. If selected as a winning project, FF will be awarded an additional $5,000, which will be used to fund FF women’s workshops and classes on various topics, including audio production, beatmaking, singing, songwriting, and music marketing.

Women in music – and particularly in electronic music – have often honed their craft in the shadows of their male counterparts, who account for the vast majority of sound engineers, producers and electronic musicians. FF intends to challenge the status quo by giving women the opportunity to carry out every aspect of the music-making process, including but not limited to writing, instrumentation, arrangement, singing, audio production and the creation of accompanying visual media. FF aspires to boost morale and confidence, provide fruitful collaborative opportunities and, ultimately, increase female representation across all sectors of the music industry.

The Only Dude on Tour

1978764_10100302702953475_1618346859_nAndrew Miller lives in Los Angeles, CA, and produces music. He has a project called UUV. He also works in film and televison, as well with as other artists.. Andrew played guitar on the Dum Dum Girl’s first record and now tours as a guitar player with the band.

Andrew recently toured with the Dum Dum Girls and found himself as the only dude on tour. We thought it would be fun to ask him some of the questions women in the industry are often asked. They of course have nothing to do with his actual job or abilities. This piece should not be taken seriously, except to point out how ridiculous these questions are.

What’s it like to be the only dude on a tour bus?

Great. In practical terms, wouldn’t anyone rather share close quarters with women than men? Creepers aside.

Do they expect you to be bus dad?

Ha, I have no idea what that means, so probably not. It’s funny though, I can imagine a bus mom, the nurturer. Actually, Claire was obviously the bus dad.

Do you get all grossed out by the girl talk?

I do girl talk, it’s one of my favorite types of talking. What’s not to love?

Are there lots of guy groupies on the bus after the show?

No. The male groupies need to step up their game though.

Do people ask which one of the band members you are sleeping with?

I don’t think so.

Don’t you want to have kids?

That’s the idea.

How does your wife or girlfriend feel about you working with all these women?

I had a girlfriend when I first joined the band and now I don’t, so I might be the wrong person to ask. Touring is hard on relationships, obviously. But there was never an issue in terms of touring with women.

Do you still get to watch porn on a bus full of women?

Porn is welcomed and well regarded in Dum Dum Girl land. But I don’t feel like a tour van is an ideal place for porn, no?1231387_10202618034362891_475064863_n
