In my position, I spend the majority of my time teaching new students how to run the equipment we own. All the artists know they are coming to a college where learning occurs, and a majority of the audience members know this too. We constantly hear from artists that we have better equipment and are more prepared than the last school they were at, and I pride myself on that achievement. My expectations for a show are no less than what a professional production person would produce. (more…)
You will need to be available for an interview. You will start by learning to work the stage, troubleshoot, and eventually hands on mixing. This is a great opportunity for our members that need hands-on show and mixing experience. Even know this is an internship – do not apply if you are not willing to treat it like a job. You must show up on time and ready to work.

I’ve recently seen some websites for sound professionals that made me cringe. Something didn’t add up, and some quick research showed exaggerated accomplishments, job titles, or experience level. There’s an industry saying that you should say yes to everything and then figure it out later (“fake it til you make it”), but when you only have one shot to make a first impression, is it worth the risk to inflate what you’ve actually done? ShapeShifter Lab to Host New York FOH/TM Workshop
When starting out as a FOH or Monitor Engineer, many of the tours you will apply for require you to wear two hats. The Tour Manager and FOH or ME or Production Manager FOH/ME, are the most common dual roles you will find. Being able to handle both roles effectively will make you more valuable, increase your skill set, and allow you to gain the experience you need to tour solely as a Sound Engineer or Tour Manager.
What do you need to know to tour manage, how to juggle soundcheck and getting your artists to soundcheck. Come find out The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of wearing two hats.

As I write this, I’m just over three-quarters of the way through a 60-day North American tour. My life in the past six weeks has revolved around spending anywhere from 3 to 12 hours a day sitting in a van, loading in, hopefully getting a soundcheck, waiting around for the set, mixing, and then loading out, all fueled by little to no sleep and a questionable diet. I might not be a doctor, but I know from personal experience that this lifestyle can take a toll on a person’s emotional and physical well-being. (more…)
Meet Maxx Brunet and Pauline Blackwood. They will be heading up the Toronto Chapter of SoundGirls.Org. Maxx lives in Toronto and tours with KEN mode. Pauline lives in Toronto and works as an audio tech. They are both excited to head up this chapter. We hope with this chapter we will be able to have an active presence in Toronto.
