The reasons people get into doing sound are wide and varied. We have all heard this reason ”yeah, I was playing guitar in this band, but wasn’t good enough, so I started mixing the sound instead”. But who has heard stage fright given as a reason? At our second European Meet Up, we learned that stage fright was indeed a reason that led to a career in sound.
We had a great time and discussed reasons why we got into sound and other sound related topics. Our group included Sophie, Laura, Hannah & myself. Again I found it remarkable how easy and comfortable the conversation was. It is great to be able to share our thoughts and experiences with other women in sound..
We got caught up with what everyone is doing.
Laura has secured an internship at a studio.Congratulations and we are looking forward to hearing all about it.
Hannah had just finished working on the Brit Awards. She assures us that she had nothing to do with Madonna tumbling down the stairs.
We welcomed Sophie, who attended the meet-up for the first time. She is only 18, but already has a ton of experience and is absolutely on her way.
I think I speak for everybody when I say, we enjoyed each others company, and we did indeed enjoy Hannah’s choice for the bar we ended up at. An Irish bar in Soho with a giant tree in the middle.
I’m glad we have started these meet-ups. It’s a great way to meet other women who share the same passion for sound. I believe they encourage us to support each other and to know we are not alone. We would love to have you join us for our next meet ups, no matter who you are or how much or little experience you have.
The next one will be on April 13th at SSR in Camden Town. Marcel van Limbeek monitor engineer for Tori Amos will talk to us about the pressures and obstacles that both women and men face. Marcel will offer advice on how best to handle these situations. It is sure to be an engaging discussion that will further the conversation on gender inequality and sexism in the industry. The discussion will also include how to deal with a lack of confidence and surviving the gigs from hell.
We also have Meet Ups planned for May and June.
May: Shure will coming to talk to us about RF and introduce us to WWB6. WWB6 is a software program that allows you to manage all your RF on a laptop.
June: Former touring engineer Tony Szabo will introduce us to LAKE. LAKE is an absolute must know software program that allows you to time align, delay and EQ your system. Tony will also discuss how to deal with room acoustics.
August: DPA – Microphone Techniques – More info TBA
Both events will be at Britannia Row in Twickenham. After both seminars, please join us at the nearest pub to catch up and meet new members.
We hope that you will take the time to come and support these European SoundGirls events. They are a great way to get to know other women in sound. No matter what field of sound you work in we would love to meet you.
