SoundGirls Supports HOA LATAM-ASIA: Rainforest Bio-Acoustic Sandbox

This November 6–8 in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, HOA LATAM-ASIA will bring together spatial audio, bio-acoustics, environmental research, and immersive technology inside a living rainforest laboratory.

Led by Luci Waisman, the Rainforest Bio-Acoustic Sandbox will deploy high-resolution 3D audio arrays directly into the Costa Rican canopy to capture and map biodiversity while exploring how High-Order Ambisonics can contribute to ecological preservation, environmental research, immersive media, gaming, XR/VR, and spatial cinema.

The project will also provide a unique opportunity for audio manufacturers and researchers to test microphones, preamps, monitors, and other technology under real-world rainforest conditions, including extreme humidity and heat. Testing will include comparing high-density 3D microphone arrays, evaluating noise floors when capturing subtle bio-acoustic signals, and examining spatial resolution across 1st through 7th-order HOA systems.

At night, the project moves from research to experience. A geodesic dome will become an immersive AV environment combining 360-degree projection, generative visuals, multichannel HOA playback, recorded rainforest soundscapes, and electronic synthesis.

SoundGirls is excited to support this project and its commitment to expanding the participation and leadership of women in cutting-edge audio and music technology.

The project is currently seeking collaborators, researchers, audio professionals, manufacturers, and sponsors interested in contributing technology, equipment, expertise, or support.

For information about participating or supporting the project, contact Project Lead Luci Waisman at groundmusic.co@gmail.com or WhatsApp +506 7051 2573.
