SoundGirls.Org Brings Live Sound Camp for Girls to Modesto

This week the community came together to welcome our live sound workshop, which was made possible through a joint venture with SoundGirls.Org and California Women’s Music Festival. This partnership provided a unique opportunity for girls 12 and older hands on experience setting up sound systems, learning how to make stage plots, input lists and so much more. Karrie Keyes and Tiffany Hendren helped the attendees to learn valuable information about setting up for live venues. Some of my favorite reactions this week have been hearing from attendees about their experiences.

Here are some reactions from attendees this week: “This was so much fun, I got to make a stage plot and learn how to mic the drums, “This is so exciting, I can’t believe that this is happening here.” “ I have learned more than I ever did taking classes in college, it was very hands on.”

For me, it has been a pleasure checking in with Karrie each day and talking about what was learned. My two daughters, 10 & 12 took the workshop and watching how excited they were each day to get back to the warehouse and mix was assurance that this is a great experience for any girl, especially girls who are already musicians.

Today where these opportunities seem to be through outside entities, I hope to be able to connect the idea that these skills are valuable as a STEM related field. Creating opportunities for mentorships and hands on learning is so valuable for the future of women in sound. Through workshops like these I think we can change the current trends. Someday soon long gone will be the days of the lone SoundGirl.
