SUMMARY:AES Design Competition – How to create an award winning design webinar
DESCRIPTION:The AES student design competition is an opportunity for you to showcase your hardware design abilities to the wider audio community. But what makes a prize-winning design? Does it have to be complicated\, unique\, contain software\, neural networks\, or other esoteric components? \nThe purpose of this session is to present some ideas about what makes a design prize-worthy and answer some of your questions about it. \nWe will focus on an audio design that won a national design (UK) for its student inventor\, along with a couple of other AES competition-winning ideas. Jamie Angus-Whiteoak will take the prize-winning design and break it down to show what it was about this design that made it “The best example of concurrent engineering that the judges had seen!” \nFrom this\, you will learn the basic principles behind design\, and see what really matters for a prize-winning one. Surprisingly it might be simpler than you might have thought! \nMarch 9 at 10 AM PST\n\n6:00 PM to 7:00 PM (England)\n1:00 PM to 2:00 PM (Eastern)\n12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (Central)\n\n11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Mountain)\n\n10:00 AM to 11:00 AM (Pacific)\n\nRegister and Post Your Questions Here\nModerated by Leslie Gaston-Bird\nLeslie Gaston-Bird\nLeslie Gaston-Bird (AMPS\, M.P.S.E.) is the author of the book “Women in Audio”\, part of the AES Presents series and published by Focal Press (Routledge). She is a voting member of the Recording Academy (The Grammys®). Currently\, she is a freelance re-recording mixer and sound editor and owner of Mix Messiah Productions specializing in 5.1 mixing. Prior to that\, she was a tenured Associate Professor of Recording Arts at the University of Colorado Denver (2005-2018) where she also served as Chair of the Department of Music and Entertainment Industry Studies. She led groups of Recording Arts students in study abroad courses in England\, Germany\, and Italy which included participation in AES Conventions. Leslie has done research on audio for planetariums\, multichannel audio on Blu-Ray\, and a comparison of multichannel codecs that was published in the AES Journal (Gaston\, L. and Sanders\, R. (2008)\, “Evaluation of HE-AAC\, AC-3\, and E-AC-3 Codecs”\, Journal of the Audio Engineering Society of America\, 56(3)). \nPresenter\nJamie Angus-Whiteoak: Was a Professor of Audio Technology at Salford University. Her interest in audio was crystallized at age 11 when she visited the WOR studios in NYC on a school trip in 1967. After this\, she was hooked and spent much of her free time studying audio\, radio\, synthesizers\, and loudspeakers\, and even managed to build some! \nDuring secondary education in Scotland\, she learned about valve (tube) circuits and repaired radios and televisions\, as well as building loudspeakers from recovered components. Then at 17\, she attended the University of Lethbridge in Alberta Canada. There\, in addition to her studies in physics\, music\, computing\, drama\, philosophy\, and English composition\, she repaired their VCS3 synthesizer\, and so obtained coveted access to the electronic music lab. She was also able to design her first proper loudspeakers and had a quadraphonic system in her 7’5” cube bedroom. \nShe studied electronics at the University of Kent (UK) doing her BSc and Ph.D. there from 1974 to 1980. During her undergraduate days\, she designed and built a variety of audio circuits\, added acoustic treatment to the student’s radio station’s studios\, and designed and built an electronic piano. She also developed and built a complete AM stereo modulation system for her final year project. During her Ph.D. study\, she became interested in A/D conversion\, and worked on a sigma-delta approach\, but had to give it up to concentrate on her Thesis topic of designing a general-purpose Digital Signal Processor with flexible arithmetic for finite field transforms. After her PhD she joined Standard Telecommunications Laboratories\, which invented optical fibres and PCM. There she worked on integrated optics\, speech coding\, speech synthesis\, and recognition in the early 80s\, and invented a novel 32kBits speech coding method. She has been active in audio and acoustic research since then. \nShe was appointed as the BT Lecturer at the University of York in 1983\, to develop the first integrated master’s (Meng) in Electronic and Communication Engineering in conjunction with British Telecom. She then co-created the UK’s first Music Technology course in 1986 when it was considered a “silly idea”!   At York\, she developed courses on electronic product design and co-authored a book on it. She also created and supervised many design-orientated final year projects\, and several of her students won national design awards for their work. \nShe is the inventor of; modulated\, wideband and absorbing diffusers\, direct processing of Super Audio CD signals\, and one of the first 4-channel digital tape recorders. She has done work on signal processing\, analogue circuits\, and numerous other audio technology topics. \nShe has taught analogue circuit design\, communications systems\, computer architecture\, microprogramming and logic design\, design for testability and reliability\, audio and video signal processing\, digital signal processing\, psychoacoustics\, sound reproduction\, electroacoustics\, loudspeaker and microphone design\,  studio design\, and audio\, speech\, and video coding. She has co-written two textbooks and has authored\, or co-authored over 200 journal and conference papers and 4 patents. She is currently investigating environmentally friendly audio technology. \nShe has been active in the AES for 30 years and has been the paper’s co-chair for conventions as well as a judge for the student project and Matlab competitions. \nShe has been awarded an AES fellowship\, the IOA Peter Barnet Memorial Award\, and the AES Silver Medal Award\, for her contributions to audio and acoustics. \nFor relaxation she likes playing drums and dancing\, but not at the same time.

SUMMARY:Ask the Experts - All About Mastering
DESCRIPTION:What is a Mastering Engineer\nMastering audio is the final step in the creative process of recording and is the first step in the distribution side of music. People often wonder what exactly a Mastering Engineer does. There is a lot that goes into mastering audio including the use of digital and analog tools\, applying and adjusting EQ\, Compression\, Limiting\, Stereo Enhancement\, and more. Mastering also allows for the chance for the project to have fresh ears. Mastering Engineers work closely with the artists\, producers\, and other engineers to reach the desired sound. \nHere is your chance to ask the questions you have about Mastering. \nJoin us on January 9 at 11 am PST \nRegister here and Post Your Questions\nModerated by \n Ainjel Emme is a musician\, songwriter\, and producer. She has spent the past 20 years immersed in the study and practice of record production\, shadowing world-class audio engineers\, working in professional studios\, and making records via her Los Angeles-based production house\, Block of Joy. \n\n  \nMastering Engineers\n\n\n\nJett Galindo – Mastering Engineer at The Bakery\n\nJett began her engineering career in the world-renowned Avatar Studios in New York as the recording engineer for producer Jerry Barnes. As Barnes’ engineer\, Jett engineered for veteran artists such as legendary singer-songwriter Roberta Flack\, Nile Rodgers and Latin Grammy-winning Brazilian rock band Jota Quest. \nIn 2013\, Jett joined The Mastering Lab family as the sole right-hand man to pioneer mastering engineer and Grammy Technical Achievement awardee Doug Sax. Under the steady mentorship of the late Sax\, Jett burgeoned to become the newest mastering engineer in The Mastering Lab roster. In 2014\, Jett’s work with Brazilian rock band Jota Quest garnered the group a Latin GRAMMY nomination for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album. \nWith engineering credits spanning different genres and legendary artists (Bette Midler\, Randy Travis\, Nile Rodgers\, Roberta Flack\, and Gustavo Santaolalla\, to name a few)\, Jett Galindo carries on the legacy left behind by her late mentor\, mastering legend Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab). She now works as a mastering engineer alongside Eric Boulanger at The Bakery\, located at the Sony Pictures Lot in Culver City\, Los Angeles. \n\nAnna Frick Mastering Engineer at Airshow Mastering\nAnna is a mastering engineer and the restoration center manager at Airshow Mastering in Boulder\, Colorado. Her work encompasses studio albums\, live recordings\, reissues\, and compilations across an array of formats\, old and new\, and a wide variety of genres and styles\, from bluegrass and folk-influenced acts to rock and New Age projects. Legends like Ralph Stanley and Doc Watson\, exciting contemporaries such as Billy Strings and GRAMMY-nominated Wood & Wire\, and important blues and jazz archival recordings have all benefited from her uncanny ear and deft touch. She balances her strong instincts and intuition with her technical experience and each client’s goals to finesse every project she tackles. “[A band has] been working on their album for quite a while by the time I hear it\, and it’s their vision – their baby – that they are putting out into the world. I don’t want to impede that vision. Ultimately\, I want the music to move you.” \nFor Airshow’s restoration center she oversees all archival digitization projects. She mastered Third Man Records’ GRAMMY-winning box set\, The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records\, as well as having mastered thousands of hours’ worth of historical recordings from university archives and collections across the country. Each project is unique\, with a singular story and special considerations: “[It] involves everything from understanding the recording medium\, the equipment\, and the transfer process to having the tools and the knowledge to tackle all sorts of bizarre problems. Understanding digital audio files and how to maintain file integrity over time.” \nAnna holds a degree in Music Industry Studies from the University of Colorado at Denver. She is a graduate of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Leadership Bluegrass program\, an AES member\, board governor and Producers & Engineers Committee Co-Chair of the Recording Academy – San Francisco Chapter\, and chapter head for Colorado’s branch of SoundGirls.org. \n\nPiper Payne – Mastering Engineer at Infrasonic\nPiper is a mastering engineer based in Nashville and Oakland\, CA. She recently merged her studio Neato Mastering with Infrasonic. Piper holds a BFA in Audio from The University of Michigan and continued her graduate education in audio at the University of Stavanger in Norway. She has apprenticed under some of the best-known Mastering and audio mentors in the world\, including Bob Katz in Orlando and Micael Romanowski in San Francisco. \nPiper is a Trustee of the Recording Academy and she serves on the P&E Wing Steering Committee and the Advisory Council. She is a Governor of the Audio Engineering Society and she is Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the AES’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee as well as an active member of Women’s Audio Mission and serves on the Board of SoundGirls.

SUMMARY:Impostor Syndrome Webinar Dec. 13
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nJoin us for a webinar on Impostor Syndrome on\nDec. 13 at 11 am PDT\nRegister Here\n“Imposter Syndrome”\, is a common mental process whereby someone has an unwarranted feeling of insecurity about their worth or their abilities\, despite the evidence showing otherwise. Often thoughts occur that cause the person to believe they are fraudulent in their efforts or talents\, and sooner or later will be found out to be “fake” or inadequate. \nKirsten Hunneyball a Certified Life Coach and Addictions and Eating Disorder Recovery Specialist will cover the basic concept\, as well as share some examples\, signs of the syndrome\, and methods for overcoming the thinking pattern. It’s important to note that this syndrome is very common\, and the more we are open about it\, the easier it will become to manage. \n\n \nKirsten Hunneyball Certified Life Coach and Addictions and Eating Disorder Recovery Specialist Coach. \n\nMy name is Kirsten Hunneyball. I currently live in Johannesburg\, South Africa. Music has always been a huge part of my life\, or rather it’s always been a huge part of me. I play the trumpet\, piano and sing. When I was at school\, the Jazz and Concert Bands were where I spent most of my time\, and music was the thing that carried me through many hardships. I have performed as a lead singer in bands at Music festivals such as Outland and Splashy Fen\, and sang in a jazz duo in Durban for 3 years before moving to Ballito. I have played trumpet as a session musician on albums and performed at the Zakifo and French Music Festivals with Red Robyn. I have also written and recorded some of my own original music. About a year ago I took a great interest in what it meant to be the person behind the scenes\, and hoped to learn how to produce my own music\, and therefore I and am currently studying a music production diploma at Abbey Road Institute in Johannesburg. \nI took a keen interest in Sound Girls a few months ago as I recognised the dire need for mental and emotional support in the creative industry. I am honoured to be a part of this fantastic cause.

SUMMARY:Anti Racism Discussion Group – August 9th at NOON PST
DESCRIPTION:Anti Racism Discussion Group\nSeveral of our members have asked that we start a discussion group on Anti-Racism Work.\nWe are forming a monthly discussion group\, where we will study on our own a video\, essay\, book\, etc. and then meet to discuss what we have learned and how we can apply it to creating a more inclusive industry.\nFor our first discussion we will watch\nIbram X. Kendi’s Lecture on How to be an Antiracist\, at UC Berkeley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxa43H8m034\nWe will discuss key questions from the How to Be an Anti-Racist Book Club  \nAnd explore and share our experiences within the industry. \nIf you want to read the book we encourage you to do so. You can order How to Be An Anti Racist directly from the publisher here or from your favorite Independent Bookseller. Consider ordering books from a black-owned bookstore find one here. \nThis discussion group will be in a safe space and we are working on rules to keep all members safe. We will be sending these out with the Zoom Link. \nAugust 9th at NOON-2 PM PST – 3 to 5 PM EST.\nThis discussion is planned for 2 hours.\nRegister here\n\nWhy Anti-Racist work?\nUsing an anti-racist intersectional frame\nAn anti-racist intersectional frame recognizes all the different ways people and communities experience racism with respect to their identities. An anti-racist frame also recognizes that racism both in the United States & abroad is grounded in and motivated by anti-Black racism. Therefore\, an anti-racist intersectional frame provides a conceptual tool to examine institutional and systemic oppression that Black\, Indigenous & People of Colour (BIPOC) face because of both their race and identities while providing a guiding approach for working with and in communities and systems to create a more just and equitable society. \nHow does anti-racist work intersect with sexism and misogyny in the music industry? Intersectional theory asserts that people are often disadvantaged by multiple sources of oppression: their race\, class\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, religion\, and other identity markers. \nAn anti-racist intersectional frame is an action-orientated frame. It critiques society’s structure and its treatment of people and communities while providing a guiding approach for how to work towards a more just and equitable society. \n\nDefinitions\nCentral to using a frame is developing a shared language. The following breaks down individual concepts as a means to better understand what an anti-racist intersectional frame entails. \nAnti-racism is the active process of identifying and challenging racism\, by changing systems\, organizational structures\, policies and practices\, and attitudes to redistribute power in an equitable manner. \nAnti-Black Racism is any attitude\, behavior\, practice\, or policy that explicitly or implicitly reflects the belief that Black people are inferior to another racial group. Anti-Black racism is reflected in interpersonal\, institutional\, and systemic levels of racism and is a function of white supremacy \nA racist idea is any concept that regards one racial group as inferior or superior to another racial group in any way. \nIntersectionality is a concept and frame coined by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989\, to describe the ways in which race\, class\, gender\, and other aspects of our identity “intersect” overlap and interact with one another\, informing the way in which individuals simultaneously experience oppression and privilege in their daily lives interpersonally and systemically. Intersectionality promotes the idea that aspects of our identity do not work in a silo. Intersectionality\, then\, provides a basis for understanding how these individual identity markers work with one another. \n\nResources on Anti-Racist Work and Intersectionality\nHOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST \nBLACK LIVES MATTER \nKimberlé Crenshaw: What is Intersectionality? \nIntersectionality Matters: A Conversation with Kimberlé Crenshaw \nSoundGirls Anti-Racist Resources

Since then\, Michelle has traveled the world mixing FOH for some of the most recognizable names in music including Indigo Girls\, Jewel\, Gwen Stefani\, Janet Jackson\, Melissa Etheridge\, Goo Goo Dolls\, Styx and many more.  In 2015 Michelle was inducted in Full Sail University’s Hall of Fame and in 2019 Michelle created and launched Mixing Music Live an online video course for live sound and mixing.  She is an active mentor and coach to those seeking a career in Live Sound and Music Production and has been a frequent speaker on industry and university panels and conferences.  Michelle is Co-Founder of soundgirls.org and she continues to be a full time touring sound engineer\, most recently on tour mixing Elvis Costello up until the current pandemic. \nKarrie has spent the last 30 years as the monitor engineer for Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder. She was able to gain an immense amount of hands-on experience and technical knowledge at Rat\, which eventually led to her becoming the monitor engineer for The Red Hot Chili Peppers from 1990-2000. She first met and started working with Pearl Jam who opened for RHCP on their 1991-1992 Blood Sugar Sex Magic Tour. She has worked with Sonic Youth\, Fugazi\, and Neil Young. Karrie is a Co-Founder of SoundGirls \nPanelists Include \nBecky Pell is a monitor engineer with 25 years’ experience in the live music industry. In 1982 she began her career working in the historic San Francisco jazz club Keystone Korner. Since 1989 Claudia has been working full time as sound engineer and tour manager for guitarist Bill Frisell. She has recorded two live albums for Frisell\, “East/West” and “Bill Frisell Live”. She has also mixed and recorded just about all of his live concerts over the past 30 years\, which has resulted in a Live Download Series\, concert recordings available for download on Frisell’s website. When not on tour with Frisell Claudia has toured extensively with many other renowned artists\, including Wayne Shorter\, Herbie Hancock\, Laurie Anderson\, Lou Reed\, Ron Carter\, Michael Brecker\, Grover Washington Jr.\, Dave Holland\, John Scofield\, Charles Lloyd\, Lee Konitz\, Marianne Faithfull\, Rosanne Cash\, Ryuichi Sakamoto\, David Sylvian\, Medeski Martin & Wood\, John Zorn\, The Kronos Quartet\, Don Cherry\, Cecil Taylor\, Eddie Palmieri\, Willie Colon\, and many others. \nMarguerite Nguyen started her career interning with a local rock station and promoter. Working as a promoter\, she realized there were not many women tour managers and decided that that was the path she would follow. She got her first gig on the road with the Indigo Girls working under Matt Miley. From there she moved to Los Angeles and has gone on to work with Coldplay\, Janet Jackson\, My Chemical Romance and more. \nMelissa Britton started mixing live sound in a classic rock biker bar in Golden\, CO. SUMMARY:Breaking Norms: Moms in Audio and The Music Industry
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar on breaking the myth of “You Can’t Be a Mom in The Music Industry” \nSaturday\, August 1 at 11 am PST \nRegister here\nIn this webinar\, you will meet several women working within the industry and are at different stages of their careers and parenting.  They will share with us wow they are navigating parenthood and their careers. \nModerated by Karrie Keyes – Monitor Engineer Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder\, Executive Director SoundGirls and single mom to twin daughters that are now 24. Her girls started life on the road in utero. \nWith \nErika Earl – Audio Experience Engineer / Hardware Developer \nErika is working on the new frontier of spatial\, immersive and interactive ambisonic audio. After working as Director of Hardware Engineering for Slate Companies and Head of Technology / Chief Tech for the Village Recording Studios\, Erika co-founded Earl Virtual Innovation Lab\, or Evil Tech\, and XR Creative to work with artists and engineers on the next generation of audio tech and experience design. When she’s not wielding a soldering iron\, recording\, or immersed in a VR headset\, you will most likely find her spending time with her 14 year old Daughter and 6 year old son writing songs and volunteering in her community. \nLeslie Gaston-Bird (AMPS\, M.P.S.E.) is author of the book “Women in Audio”\, part of the AES Presents series and published by Focal Press (Routledge). She is a voting member of the Recording Academy and a freelance re-recording mixer and sound editor. She was a tenured Associate Professor of Recording Arts at the University of Colorado Denver and Fulbright Scholar; prior to that she worked as a sound editor for Post Modern Company\, Colorado Public Radio\, and National Public Radio. She is on the advisory board for SoundGirls. Leslie is the proud mother of a 10-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter. \nKille Knobel has been the LD for Pearl Jam for 20 years and has toured with Cher\, Bette Midler\, Temple of the Dog\, Soundgarden\, The Smashing Pumpkins and many others.  When she is not on the road\, she works on The Jimmy Kimmel Show and wrangles her three sons- 15\, 12\, & 11. \nKaren Loria is the Operations Manager for Pearl Jam. She started her career in the music business working for Righteous Babe Records while pursuing a graduate degree in photography at the University of Buffalo in NY.  She moved to Seattle and started working with local music venues in various positions supporting live shows. In 2006 she was drafted to the PJ organization and has spent the last 14 years supporting the band both on the road and in the band’s HQ as the bands Ticketing Program Manager\, Tour Photographer\, Fan Club Co-manager and now the Operations Manager.  Karen is a mother of 2 little boys\, 5 and 3 years old\, and holds a Board Position for Keep Music Live\, a nonprofit aimed at assisting Washington State independent music venues impacted by the Covid-19 closures. \nJeanne Montalvo is a Grammy-nominated audio engineer and radio producer. She was selected amongst thousands of applicants as the 2018 EQL resident at Spotify Studios and Electric Lady Studios in New York City\, assisting in the recording process for artists like John Legend\, Alessia Cara\, and many more. She also recorded sessions with Ivy Queen\, Making Movies and Ruben Blades\, Flor de Toloache\, and Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra. In 2017\, she was nominated for a Grammy Award as Mastering Engineer for Vladimir Horowitz: The Unreleased Live Recordings\, and her recording of Multiverse by Bobby Sanabria’s Latin Jazz Big Band was nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album at the 2012 Grammy Awards. She’s worked at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Tanglewood Music Festival\, and worked on live recordings with Spike Lee and Al Kooper. She broke into radio after receiving her Masters in Music Technology from New York University\, working as an audio engineer and producer for National Public Radio and the Duolingo Podcast. She is also the creator of “Live from Latino USA” a live and (mostly) unplugged video series that features Latinx talent from Jessie Reyez to Jose Feliciano. She is currently the treasurer of the Audio Engineering Society New York Section. She is the mom of a 2 1/2-year-old toddler. \nTina Morris started her career in music as a guitar and Music Production/Engineering student at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Immediately after college she started her professional career at Sound Techniques giving her a head start as an engineer and studio tech and working with some of the best in the business. After years of gigging with her band as a heavy metal guitarist\, working as a freelance engineer for NPR\, Q Division Studios and The Blue Man Group she decided to move to LA with her husband. After moving she landed the position of head evening tech for The Village Studios.  Continuing to impress employers and clients alike with her expertise\, Tina’s hard work was rewarded with a promotion to her current position as Studio Manager of The Village. Now the proud mother of her son Jackson\, age 10\, Tina still manages to balance her role of manager and mom. \nApril Tucker (CAS) April has worked in Los Angeles for 15 years in post-production sound for films\, television\, new media\, and marketing/advertising. She has performed nearly every role in the process from the bottom up; she started as a PA at a studio and worked her way up to re-recording mixer – doing everything from Foley\, ADR and sound editing along the way. She is mom to a 3 year old boy. \n\nSociety tells us that being a mom means putting your dreams on hold. If you are working in audio\, tour production\, or the music industry you are told you simply can’t be a mom because of the long and sporadic work hours\, travel\, and simply being on tour for several weeks/ months each year. \nIt’s easy to fall into that belief and give up on our dreams because that’s what society tells us. Society also tells us this only applies to women\, no one in the industry cares if our male counterparts are dads. \nWhat we are not told is that it can be done\, it might take a village\, but it always has. How much better you will be as a mother who is following her passion. That it is possible to be working in a field you love and also a mother. It isn’t easy\, but it is certainly possible – just look at your own career path\, which certainly was not easy.
