All while touring as a FOH Engineer for major acts and still working local hometown gigs. As a monitor engineer with Maryland Sound International\, he toured with artists like Tears for Fears\, Don Henley\, Disturbed\,\nJosh Groban\, Anthony Hamilton and more. \nChris is currently Director of Audio at IMS Technology Services\, where he has spent the last ten years overseeing and managing all aspects of audio for the Event Staging Division of the company. IMS is a full-scale production company providing audio\, video\, and lighting for special events\, conferences\, and conventions nationwide. A highlight while at IMS includes designing and mixing for the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl victory parade\, with an estimated 800\,000 + audience and the largest outdoor event in Philadelphia’s history. He has also worked on the last four Presidential Inaugurations. \nChris is a co-host on the Signal To Noise Podcast presented by ProSoundWeb. The podcast has over 70 episodes and has been downloaded over 100\,000 times. The show features conversations with people from all corners of the live sound industry\, from FOH and monitor engineers\, tour managers\, Broadway sound designers\, broadcast mixers\, and more. (2008)\, “Evaluation of HE-AAC\, AC-3\, and E-AC-3 Codecs”\, Journal of the Audio Engineering Society of America\, 56(3)). \nPresenter\nJamie Angus-Whiteoak: Was a Professor of Audio Technology at Salford University. Her interest in audio was crystallized at age 11 when she visited the WOR studios in NYC on a school trip in 1967. After this\, she was hooked and spent much of her free time studying audio\, radio\, synthesizers\, and loudspeakers\, and even managed to build some! \nDuring secondary education in Scotland\, she learned about valve (tube) circuits and repaired radios and televisions\, as well as building loudspeakers from recovered components. Then at 17\, she attended the University of Lethbridge in Alberta Canada. There\, in addition to her studies in physics\, music\, computing\, drama\, philosophy\, and English composition\, she repaired their VCS3 synthesizer\, and so obtained coveted access to the electronic music lab. She was also able to design her first proper loudspeakers and had a quadraphonic system in her 7’5” cube bedroom. \nShe studied electronics at the University of Kent (UK) doing her BSc and Ph.D. there from 1974 to 1980. During her undergraduate days\, she designed and built a variety of audio circuits\, added acoustic treatment to the student’s radio station’s studios\, and designed and built an electronic piano. She also developed and built a complete AM stereo modulation system for her final year project. During her Ph.D. study\, she became interested in A/D conversion\, and worked on a sigma-delta approach\, but had to give it up to concentrate on her Thesis topic of designing a general-purpose Digital Signal Processor with flexible arithmetic for finite field transforms. After her PhD she joined Standard Telecommunications Laboratories\, which invented optical fibres and PCM. There she worked on integrated optics\, speech coding\, speech synthesis\, and recognition in the early 80s\, and invented a novel 32kBits speech coding method. She has been active in audio and acoustic research since then. \nShe was appointed as the BT Lecturer at the University of York in 1983\, to develop the first integrated master’s (Meng) in Electronic and Communication Engineering in conjunction with British Telecom. She then co-created the UK’s first Music Technology course in 1986 when it was considered a “silly idea”!   At York\, she developed courses on electronic product design and co-authored a book on it. She also created and supervised many design-orientated final year projects\, and several of her students won national design awards for their work. \nShe is the inventor of; modulated\, wideband and absorbing diffusers\, direct processing of Super Audio CD signals\, and one of the first 4-channel digital tape recorders. She has done work on signal processing\, analogue circuits\, and numerous other audio technology topics. \nShe has taught analogue circuit design\, communications systems\, computer architecture\, microprogramming and logic design\, design for testability and reliability\, audio and video signal processing\, digital signal processing\, psychoacoustics\, sound reproduction\, electroacoustics\, loudspeaker and microphone design\,  studio design\, and audio\, speech\, and video coding. She has co-written two textbooks and has authored\, or co-authored over 200 journal and conference papers and 4 patents. She is currently investigating environmentally friendly audio technology. \nShe has been active in the AES for 30 years and has been the paper’s co-chair for conventions as well as a judge for the student project and Matlab competitions. \nShe has been awarded an AES fellowship\, the IOA Peter Barnet Memorial Award\, and the AES Silver Medal Award\, for her contributions to audio and acoustics. \nFor relaxation she likes playing drums and dancing\, but not at the same time.

DESCRIPTION:  \nThe role of FOH or Monitor Tech differs from the role of system and stage techs\, system engineers and crew chiefs. They work alongside FOH and Monitor Engineers and responsible for setting up and maintaining the FOH/Mon equipment. (consoles and processing). The FOH Tech is responsible for running walk in and out music\, announcements\, media feeds. FOH techs often fill the role of the system engineer and are responsible for or assist in the EQ and time alignment of the system and setting the rigging points. FOH Techs can be called on to record the performance through digital technology such as Pro Tools. FOH Techs often mix the opening artists. FOH Techs should have solid experience with different consoles and outboard processing. \nAt the other end of the snake\, Monitor Techs are often responsible for In-Ear Monitoring Systems (IEMs) and RF coordination. The Monitor Tech will most likely be responsible for mixing monitors for the opening artists. She has toured with JayZ\, Beyonce\, Lady Gaga\, Rihanna\, Earth\, Wind and Fire\, Drake\, and Madonna to name a few. She is also an entrepreneur working to introduce more women and people of color to the technical side of the touring industry\, through what she likes to call S.T.E.M.M. – Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Math and Music. \nTrevor Waite \nTrevor works for Group One Limited as a technical support engineer. The company is the US distributor for Digico\, Calrec\, Klang: technologies and Avolites\, among other professional audio and lighting brands. Prior to this Trevor was an audio technician for Firehouse Productions and Eighth Day Sound. Trevor has worked as technician\, engineer and crew chief for multiple tours\, festivals\, and one-offs. Over the years\, as both an independent and staff engineer\, he has mixed monitors for countless well-known artists\, including Harry Belafonte\, Roger Daltrey\, Pete Townshend\, Thirty Seconds to Mars\, The Black Keys and many others. \nTrevor worked for The Who  (from 2007 – 2019) as a monitor tech for their two monitor engineers Bob Pridden and Simon Higgs. Trevor would take over mixing for Pete Townshend when Bob retired. \nRachael Moser\nRachael has worked for Clair Global in Nashville for over ten years as a PA Tech\, Monitor Systems Tech\, RF Tech\, Monitor Mixer\, and most recently System Engineer/Crew Chief. She has worked in audio for over 15 years and attended Belmont University\, graduating from their Audio Engineering Technology program with a BS and minor in business \nIvan Ortiz\nIvan is an audio veteran\, with over 18 years of experience in professional audio – gaining his education working for a small sound company that specialized in Latin acts while attending Full Sail. After he graduated he headed to the west coast – taking an internship at Rat Sound Systems and his “can-do attitude” led to weekend work with several Los Angeles-based sound companies. Ivan would go on to tour as a system tech for Blink 182\, Jimmy Eat World\, Pepe Aguilar and toured for several years as a monitor engineer for My Chemical Romance\, Gavin DeGraw\, and multiple fill-in gigs for other bands as FOH or MON Engineer. \nIvan would go on to work for LD Systems in Houston Texas working the Houston Rodeo as Monitors Engineer for the event for five consecutive years. While working for LD Systems Ivan also had the opportunity to work on nationally televised events as the A1 for NCAA Final Four\, NCAA Sweet Sixteen\, Houston’s Thanksgiving Day Parade\, before returning to Rat as shop manager and all-around Tech Master.  Ivan is now the Technical Resources and Account Manager at Rat Sound Systems. \n

At present Bert is a full-time lecturer at the Dutch Film Academy and at the Royal Conservatory\, mainly lecturing in the areas of electro-acoustics and psychoacoustics. \nBert has been an AES member for over 25 years and during that period he has a long history as a committee member for the Dutch AES Section. He has served as its Secretary for the past 10 years. He has organized a multitude of section meetings and tutorials on various audio-related subjects and presented tutorials on microphones and digital audio. He is pro-active in encouraging communication with the student community. \nBert served as a member of the convention committee for the 124th AES Convention in Amsterdam in May 2008. In his spare time\, Bert is a baritone singer in one of the larger choirs of the Hague and he is also an enthousiastic amateur photographer. \nJamie Angus-Whiteoak\nProfessor Emerita of Audio Technology at Salford University. Her interest in audio was crystallized at age 11 when she visited the WOR studios in NYC on a school trip in 1967. After this she was hooked\, and spent much of her free time studying audio\, radio\, synthesizers\, and loudspeakers\, and even managed to build some!\nAfter secondary education in Scotland\, in 1973 she attended the University of Lethbridge in Alberta Canada. There\, in addition to her studies in physics\, music\, computing\, drama\, philosophy\, and english composition\, she repaired their VCS3 synthesizer\, and so obtained coveted access to the electronic music lab. \nShe then studied electronics at Kent (UK) doing her BSc and Ph.D. there from 1974 to 1980. During her Ph.D. study\, she became interested in A/D conversion\, and worked on a sigma-delta approach\, but had to give it up to concentrate on her Thesis topic of designing a general-purpose Digital Signal Processor. After her Ph.D.\, she joined Standard Telecommunications Laboratories\, which invented optical fibres and PCM. There she worked on integrated optics\, speech coding\, speech synthesis\, and recognition in the early 80s\, and invented a novel 32kBits speech coding method. She has been active in audio and acoustic research since then. \nShe was appointed as the BT Lecturer at the University of York in 1983\, to develop the first integrated masters (Meng) in Electronic and Communication Engineering in conjunction with British Telecom. She then co-created the UK’s first Music Technology course in 1986 when it was considered a “silly idea”! She is the inventor of; modulated\, wideband and absorbing diffusers\, direct processing of Super Audio CD signals\, and one of the first 4-channel digital tape recorders. She has done work on signal processing\, analogue circuits\, and numerous other audio technology topics. She teaches audio and video signal processing\, Psychoacoustics\, Sound reproduction\, studio design\, audio\, and video coding\, and loudspeaker and microphone design. She has co-written two textbooks and has authored\, or co-authored over 200 journal and conference papers and 4 patents. She is currently investigating environmentally friendly audio technology. She has been awarded; the AES Silver medal\, an AES fellowship\, and the IOA Peter Barnet Memorial prize\, for her contributions to audio\, acoustics\, and education.\nFor relaxation she likes playing drums and dancing\, but not usually at the same time.

She now works as a mastering engineer alongside Eric Boulanger at The Bakery\, located at the Sony Pictures Lot in Culver City\, Los Angeles. \n\nAnna Frick Mastering Engineer at Airshow Mastering\nAnna is a mastering engineer and the restoration center manager at Airshow Mastering in Boulder\, Colorado. Her work encompasses studio albums\, live recordings\, reissues\, and compilations across an array of formats\, old and new\, and a wide variety of genres and styles\, from bluegrass and folk-influenced acts to rock and New Age projects. Legends like Ralph Stanley and Doc Watson\, exciting contemporaries such as Billy Strings and GRAMMY-nominated Wood & Wire\, and important blues and jazz archival recordings have all benefited from her uncanny ear and deft touch. She balances her strong instincts and intuition with her technical experience and each client’s goals to finesse every project she tackles. “[A band has] been working on their album for quite a while by the time I hear it\, and it’s their vision – their baby – that they are putting out into the world. I don’t want to impede that vision. Ultimately\, I want the music to move you.” \nFor Airshow’s restoration center she oversees all archival digitization projects. She mastered Third Man Records’ GRAMMY-winning box set\, The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records\, as well as having mastered thousands of hours’ worth of historical recordings from university archives and collections across the country. Each project is unique\, with a singular story and special considerations: “[It] involves everything from understanding the recording medium\, the equipment\, and the transfer process to having the tools and the knowledge to tackle all sorts of bizarre problems. Understanding digital audio files and how to maintain file integrity over time.” \nAnna holds a degree in Music Industry Studies from the University of Colorado at Denver. She is a graduate of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Leadership Bluegrass program\, an AES member\, board governor and Producers & Engineers Committee Co-Chair of the Recording Academy – San Francisco Chapter\, and chapter head for Colorado’s branch of SoundGirls.org. \n\nPiper Payne – Mastering Engineer at Infrasonic\nPiper is a mastering engineer based in Nashville and Oakland\, CA. She recently merged her studio Neato Mastering with Infrasonic. Piper holds a BFA in Audio from The University of Michigan and continued her graduate education in audio at the University of Stavanger in Norway. I currently live in Johannesburg\, South Africa. Music has always been a huge part of my life\, or rather it’s always been a huge part of me. I play the trumpet\, piano and sing. When I was at school\, the Jazz and Concert Bands were where I spent most of my time\, and music was the thing that carried me through many hardships. I have performed as a lead singer in bands at Music festivals such as Outland and Splashy Fen\, and sang in a jazz duo in Durban for 3 years before moving to Ballito. I have played trumpet as a session musician on albums and performed at the Zakifo and French Music Festivals with Red Robyn. I have also written and recorded some of my own original music. About a year ago I took a great interest in what it meant to be the person behind the scenes\, and hoped to learn how to produce my own music\, and therefore I and am currently studying a music production diploma at Abbey Road Institute in Johannesburg. \nI took a keen interest in Sound Girls a few months ago as I recognised the dire need for mental and emotional support in the creative industry. Therefore\, an anti-racist intersectional frame provides a conceptual tool to examine institutional and systemic oppression that Black\, Indigenous & People of Colour (BIPOC) face because of both their race and identities while providing a guiding approach for working with and in communities and systems to create a more just and equitable society. \nHow does anti-racist work intersect with sexism and misogyny in the music industry? Intersectional theory asserts that people are often disadvantaged by multiple sources of oppression: their race\, class\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, religion\, and other identity markers. \nAn anti-racist intersectional frame is an action-orientated frame. It critiques society’s structure and its treatment of people and communities while providing a guiding approach for how to work towards a more just and equitable society. \n\nDefinitions\nCentral to using a frame is developing a shared language. The following breaks down individual concepts as a means to better understand what an anti-racist intersectional frame entails. \nAnti-racism is the active process of identifying and challenging racism\, by changing systems\, organizational structures\, policies and practices\, and attitudes to redistribute power in an equitable manner. \nAnti-Black Racism is any attitude\, behavior\, practice\, or policy that explicitly or implicitly reflects the belief that Black people are inferior to another racial group. Anti-Black racism is reflected in interpersonal\, institutional\, and systemic levels of racism and is a function of white supremacy \nA racist idea is any concept that regards one racial group as inferior or superior to another racial group in any way. \nIntersectionality is a concept and frame coined by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989\, to describe the ways in which race\, class\, gender\, and other aspects of our identity “intersect” overlap and interact with one another\, informing the way in which individuals simultaneously experience oppression and privilege in their daily lives interpersonally and systemically. Intersectionality promotes the idea that aspects of our identity do not work in a silo.
